Pelicans made their first Lake Herman appearance of the year today. Several dozen of the majestic birds can be seen (right now! out my window! gleaming white in the evening sun!) dotting the lake, where they are surely sampling Herman's selection of bullhead, crawdads, and other freshwater treats. After a seemingly brief stay of the migrating geese in March, and after several unseasonably chilly April days, I relish the spring sight of our graceful, big-billed friends circling high over the lake and gliding single file in their disciplined, unhurried bands from bay to bay.
