Mount Blogmore's Bill Harlan turns me on to the most amazing quote of the day:
Leslee Unruh from the National Abstinence Clearinghouse shared about her group’s new and successful way to ban abortion in South Dakota by framing the debate as a feminist issue.
“We’re not saying ‘abortion is wrong,’” she said, according to the Times. “We’re taking women by the hand and saying ‘let us help you.’ The days of standing by abortion clinics with pictures of dead babies, that’s over.”
[Michelle Vu, "Pro-Family Summit Faces Opposition,"The Christian Post, 2007.09.24]
Abortion isn't wrong. I didn't say it; Leslee Unruh did. Have the Unruh-Hunt-Howie cabal of radical right-wingers realized that supporting "family values" means helping people, not jduging and excluding them?
Pilots, watch out for pigs....
Unruh is an idiot. I know some people that are big time pro-lifers and I told them if there cause is going to get any serious support, they need to dump their front person, Leslie Unruh. Argh...
ReplyDeleteThis last election, my husband and I about died laughing on the couch when KELO interviewed her after the polls closed. She was rambling about how some of her people had been arrested and that they needed security, blah blah blah. And the Cheshire Cat Smile she does.. what more can I say.
You should have seen the one-act play that KELO scene inspired.
ReplyDeleteShe didn't say abortion isn't wrong. She said that her group isn't telling people that what they are contemplating doing is wrong, they are instead simply offering to help them.
ReplyDeleteOh, Anon, don't try confusing the issue with context. I'm taking Unruh at the meaning of that one line. It's simpler that way.
ReplyDeleteBut this "taking women by the hand" business -- anything like Keely & Du?
I gotta believe what's really going through Unruh's head when she said that is this:
ReplyDelete"We're not saying 'abortion is wrong' (although I know it is). We're saying 'let us help you.'"
She still think it's wrong, she's just not going to say that to pregnant women. Which may oddly enough, be smart on her part.
Now you're trying to read people's minds. "In actuality it's impossible to ascertain a person's state of mind," so we have to take Leslee at the meaning of those exact words. She is no longer supporting the main argument of the whole movement, that abortion is wrong. Amazing! Revolutionary!
ReplyDeleteI know it sounds too good to be true, more like rhetorical tricks and PR strategy than genuine belief, but a pious, love-filled woman like Leslee would never play word games.
Doesn't planned parenthood already council pregnant girls/women on their options and what would be best for them? Pretty much the same thing Leslee is saying except one of the options she wont offer will be the abortion.
ReplyDeleteSadat and Begin came together; so can Leslee Unruh and Planned Parenthood!
