Winning the War on Plagiarism?

We are pleased to report that the Chamber newsletter has shown signs of improvement lately. Particularly, authors Sascha Albrecht and Dwaine Chapel, after a nasty bout of plagiarism back in July, appear to be generating much more of their own content for the newsletter. Readers of the September Chamber newsletter will be pleased to see that, when these authors write their own stuff, it can be thankfully local and relevant.

Plagiarism pops to mind this morning not just because the latest Chamber newsletter came out in last night's MDL, but also because I find a good post on the subject on Wireless and Tireless, from DSU's very succinct and eloquent Dr. Casualene Meyer. She gives us one more reason that plagiarism matters:

Perhaps plagiarism's biggest theft is the taking of a unique, fresh, verbal perspective. Plagiarism robs the self of its own voice and others of the self's voice, too. [Casualene Meyer, "Paddington Bear and the Great Plagiarism Adventure," Wireless and Tireless, 2007.09.09

Well put, and worth remembering as the school year swings into full gear. Keep reading, kids, and keep fully citing your sources!

  1. "War" on Plagiarism? Dig me a foxhole and get me some grenades... these plagiarists just keep on comin'!

Seriously, I think this melodramatic blog needs a little war against outrageous hyperbole.

  2. In my opinion plagiarism seems to follow Dwaine Chapel very close as in "Hand in Hand". It may be a good deal if Chapel can produce his authored writings with some outside help. If this is what we recieve in exchange for an undisclosed salary; I dread what we would have to pay for "original" work pertaining to his publications. On the other hand... Are we getting the best bang for our buck? I sure hope that there isn't a "bonus" or "retention fee" that we are paying him in addition to the salary of the "Director"! Does anyone really know what direction he is heading? and do we want to follow the footstep of the lost?
