Special for our Yankton readers: five days out from the recall election, Commissioner Dan Rupiper has a new website! The newyankton.info folks link to DanRupiper.com, which went online this morning at 6:35 (at least that's the "LastSaved" tag in the source code).
It's not an impressive website -- just one page, no functionality, no links, no contact information. But then if you live in Yankton, you can probably just pick up a phone book or call City Hall. Rupiper's page has the basics: nice picture, fair slogan, good outline of achievements and reasons to keep him in office. And given the short time before the election, maybe that's plenty for the online side of the campaign.
See? Online democracy isn't that hard, is it? Turn on the computer, make your case, and let the voters decide.

Recall election should be based on truth, not lies and deceit. The Yankton recall is hardly the democratic process. The city manager and his park and rec director should have been fired.

The recall mob even tried to attempt to file a friend of the brief based on proven lies.
There is absolutely no proof for the grounds in the recall. The Press and Dakotan was brave to point this out in a recent opinion.
They is something seriouly wrong in a society when signatures for petitions can be obtained on falsehoods. I hope and pray the state legislatures will change these recall laws so this abuse can never happen again.
I feel very sorry for Bernard and Rupiper. Their only crime was wanting what was best for our community.
I also feel posting bias blogs by the owners of blogs site soley for the purpose of increased visitation is equally distasteful. Blogs are great for getting out the truth, unfortunately the exact opposite can also happen. Increasing the depth and spreading of lies.
"Bias blogs"? That's either utterly redundant or a baseless accuasation. Likewise "posted solely for the purpose of increased visitation"? I think every blogger posts hoping that more people will read her/his take on the truth and learn something or get involved in spreading the conversation. That's why I tolerate the newyankton.info comments posted here with their links to increase their visitation.
ReplyDeleteOn an earlier point, the legislature should keep its hands off the recall process. The general citizenry is already shut out of the process by too many factors -- big money, lobbyists, party politics, etc. The power of recall is a fair and necessary component of the checks and balances system, which applies not just to the three branhces of government but also to the general public.
