Dakota Voice headline: "Most Legislators Support Putting Abortion Ban on Ballot"

About half the members of the South Dakota Legislature support a plan to hold a statewide vote on a proposed abortion ban that includes exceptions for rape, incest or threats to a woman's life or health, according to a survey by The Associated Press....
One hundred of the 105 members of the South Dakota Legislature responded to the AP mail survey. Fifty-one said they believe an abortion ban with exceptions for rape, incest or the life or health of a woman should be put on the November ballot. Another 29 said they oppose the public vote, and 18 were undecided [Chet Brokaw, Associated Press Sunday, "Survey: Many Lawmakers Support Another Vote on Abortion Ban," Rapid City Journal, 2008.01.06.
I have better things to do than search the Web for a definition of "most" that includes "about half." Maybe Bob can find me one in Leviticus.
While Sibby wages further war against the secular humanist monsters in his closet (and on the Republican ticket -- yes, you should laugh), I muse at the strangeness of Bob Ellis, who says there are darn few people more pro-Christian than he, flatly misrepresenting numerical facts... and on the Sabbath, no less.
Just another example of how those who use South Dakota politics to make a show of their piety will say whatever they think will further their cause, regardless of truth or accuracy.

51 vastly outnumbers 29, but you are correct, Cory. I misstated the truth about this article. It was not an intentional misrepresentation, but it was a misrepresentation, nevertheless. I have changed it to "More Legislators Support Putting Abortion Ban on Ballot Than Oppose."

No, Bob, catching your regular mistakes -- like your use of the words "murder" and "Christian," not to mention your whole warped theology and conception of justice -- doesn't make me feel much better. I nonetheless appreciate your acknowledgment of this error. One down, many to go....
ReplyDeleteMurder is defined as the wrongful killing of an innocent human being, so that's pretty apt for what abortion is.
ReplyDeleteA Christian is one who follows Christ, which I don't do perfectly, but I try very hard to do. He has allowed me to be born again and His Spirit helps me to follow Him a little better every day.
But if you consider punishing lawbreakers and holding people accountable for their actions a "warped" conception of justice, and if you consider believing what the Bible says "warped" theology, then I truly feel sorry for you.
Why don't you see if there's a Truth Project somewhere in your area. None of us ever sees the truth fully in our fallen human condition, but trying to understand what God has told us in the Bible and trying to communicate with him on a daily basis really helps. It helps dispel the upside down lies that we are all fed every day that says good is bad and bad is good. Check around and see if there's a Truth Project in your area.
It is always amazing how people who are passionate against any form of abortion take liberty with descriptive language, trying to tint their words to make all others feel like they are part of some criminal minority. The fact is that life begins at birth, not conception. You were right, Cory, 51 of 105 legislators is not a majority, no matter how they slice it. This issue will always be a conflict of interest between church and state and in my opinion, legislators need to get off the religious bandwagon when they are in Pierre.
ReplyDelete"life begins at birth" Sounds like anonymous needs to go back to science class. Tell any mother feeling her baby kicking and hiccuping and turning somersaults that her baby is not alive. If a baby in the womb did not have life it would not grow, which it does from the moment of conception.

Here's Bob's and the fundagelicals' equivocation on "murder": Bob says abortion is murder, but he has never called for a judicial response to abortion equivalent to the response to murder. If abortion is so clearly murder, then Bob and the fundagelicals should be circulating a petition calling for the death penalty for women who kill or hire a hitman/doctor to kill their fetuses. The fundies say abortion is murder, but they refuse to treat it like murder.

ReplyDeleteI prefer to get my theology from someone who's actually been to a theological school, like, oh, say, my wife. Dr. Dobson's degree is in child psychology. No wonder your theology is such a mess.
Maybe for greedy liberals it's all about money, but Dobson started Focus on the Family to minister to the family, which has been under assault in America for over 40 years. He did that not to get rich but to help families and Christians who are under the gun from a world full of lies.
ReplyDeleteAs for Dobson not having a degree in theology, one isn't needed to adequately understand the Bible (Matthew 11:25, Luke 10:21, Acts 4:13, 1 Corinthians 1:19-20, 1 Corinthians 1:26-27).

As for my theology, I know it isn't perfect, as no human being's is. But I work very hard to base my worldview on the Bible rather than the doctrines of flawed human beings. If I start by trying to understand the worldview of God, I'll come a lot closer to the truth than if I work on trying to understand a worldview of some other human that's flawed to start with.
And incidentally, one of the men I learn from is my pastor, who has two PhD degrees, has been to the Holy Land countless times and participated in archaeological digs, has been a seminary professor for decades, has taught countless pastors around the world in places like Russia and the Philippines, and has served as the president of a Bible college. I'm learning from one of the best.
But since my pastor isn't in your area, I'd look for a Truth Project nearby. If a person wants to know the truth, the place to start is the book written by the One who is the author of all Truth.

ReplyDeleteWhy would I want to get my theology from a guy with his BS in computer science, an MS in software engineering, and a doctorate in management from Colorado Technical University? Let's see, I'm reviewing the CTU DM curriculum... gee, imagine that: no courses in biblical languages or exegesis... oh, wait: CTU must have covered all that in "Science, Values, and Ethics" -- all 5 credits of it. Amazing they could fit that in next to "Research and Writing XII."
Why would a church spend money on such a program? I can't wait 'til I get my D.Sc in Information Systems from DSU -- I'll be just as qualified as Tackett to peddle a Bible-study program.
