...and you thought PDFs were hard on your bandwidth!
My friend Michael tells me the Internet is going to move away from text toward multimedia. Daggers to this writer's heart! But just in case there's a wave I need to get out in front of (or out from behind of!), I thought I'd experiment and see how this podcasting stuff works. I've recorded an audio version of my most recent post about Dakota Women. If you dare, click play....

If you like this feature (if you hate it), let me know! I might tinker around with it a little more. Happy listening!

So a friend of mine made this rap a few years back, and I have to tell you
I have friends over the years who went there and tell the same boring
stories, LOL.

Have you thought about a career in broadcasting? :)
ReplyDeleteJust curious... what did you use to record, software-wise? The quality is quite good.
My only suggestion, Cory, is not to do a verbatim reading of one of your other posts. If you want to do a "podcast", do something unique with it. An interview with a community leader or author... A song parody... or even a dirty joke (okay, kidding on the dirty joke!)
Basically, and I'm looking at this from a programmer's standpoint (broadcast, not computer). An audio file should add something completely different than just a reading of a posting.
I would suggest logging on to the Argus Leader's website and checking out Terry Vandrovec's SDSU blog. He does a nice job of incorporating video and audio files to enhance his postings.
Sorry if I sound like a teacher... you do it for one year and it sticks with you!
By the way, that previous posting was from me. I forgot to log out of my Madison Kiwanis Gmail account and use my own. But that's what happens at 2 in the morning!
ReplyDeleteThanks, jackrabit1!
ReplyDeleteSoftware: Audacity, a free program. It has bunches of features that I have no idea how to use. Props to Halgy from Montrose: He introduced me to it when he mixed the soundtrack for 30:30 -- The Popcorn Show
I agree -- if I bother with podcasting, it should be a unique feature, not just "Madville Times on Tape." But good radio takes effort!
People can read so much faster than they can listen to someone speak, although hearing a person's own words gives them the meaning intended. I prefer reading because I'm a fast reader. Even our company puts out a webcast each month with the option to read the script. I prefer the script unless there is a need for vocal motivation. One thing I've learned about human behavior is that people will only dedicate a certain amount of time each day to listen to a radio, read a newspaper or participate in a blog, so simple and quick are the keys to exposure.
ReplyDeleteI like the pod cast concept. I'll even let you interview me sometime.
ReplyDeletePodcasting allows me to multi-task at work. While I'm doing something mindless like filing claims or preparing a massive amount of envelopes and I'm sick of all 5329 songs I have on iTunes (16.4 days if played continuously), then I'll find something like the YouTube presidential debates or NPR or infidelguy to give me something to think about.
But earn my acoustic attention you would have to talk about interesting things... like your political philosophy, worldview, or opinions on major religions... not ice cream, Shawn Cable, or teacher pay.
