Total Recall -- Bill Targets School Boards

PP may get his wish: HB 1150 would grant citizens the power to recall school board members. Not that any school districts can afford recall elections, but it would be nice for citizens to have the same power over school board members as they have over mayors, city councillors, and other elected officials. Then again, here in Madison, we have trouble finding enough willing candidates to fill vacant seats as it is. If we start recalling board members, we might end up with a bunch of empty chairs setting school policy.

  1. After reading the Bill, it seems pretty loose in the fact a person can take up to six months to gather signatures and doesn't specify what acts would be considered horrible enough to ask for a recall.

If your child gets a poor grade, do you start circulating petitions for recall, or if your kid doesn't get enough playing time in football, do you go after a board member? This needs to go away or become much more specific as far as which acts would be cause for recall.

Of course, if Righteous Roger Hunt is a sponsor of the bill, which he is, I'm not going to like it. Roger's all about more government interference.

  2. I think that we have too many people on the school right now. It seems that when they meet and a decision is made and it doesn't go the right way it gets passed as, "We'll I am in the minority compared to the rest of them.

I think they should look at decreasing the number of board members down to 5. This seems very reasonable to me. Lets get more involved with the board, and how they take the action that they do.

  3. "get more involved"? Now's the perfect time! Tuesday's MDL said neither Goeman nor Thompson plans to run again, and Zolnowsky is leaning against serving again as well. Grab your petition, sign up now!

  4. ANON#2 says "when they meet and a decision is made and it doesn't go the right way", and I'm wondering how a democratic majority decision "doesn't go the right way"? Sure, school boards and city commission or any other board will disagree, but anyone who has served understands that even if you are in the minority when a vote is taken, the entire board must support the final decision, even if you don't agree with it. People who can't bring themselves to accept that shouldn't serve on a board because they don't believe in a group decision process. Getting back to the recall bill for school board members, it does not make sense, but we'll have to trust our legislators to make a logical decision on the bill.
