KJAM Survey: 3 to 1 Say Guns Don't Improve Campus Safety

HB 1261, the superfluous exercise in rhetoric reiterating the Second Amendment, is the topic on today's SDPB Dakota Midday. Tune in for your dose of macho bluster.

The bill passed the House 63-3. Both of our District 8 reps voted with the herd, probably afraid they would not have been able to explain their vote to voters in 60 seconds or less. But it appears they wouldn't have much explaining to do to KJAM listeners. The radio station has been running an online survey for the past few days asking "Do you think allowing guns on College Campuses makes them [the campuses, not the guns] safer?" The results so far: 22.8% say yes, 71.9% say no, and 5.3% are still deciding whether to duck or draw. Looks like Douglas isn't the only one who thinks the Regents might actually have good public safety reasons for telling students to check their guns at the ivy gates.

The survey is still open, so hurry on over, cast your vote, and skew the results I'm reporting here. (Plus, an earlier commenter this morning has me feeling guilty, so go give the KJAM website some love!)

  2. Personally, I don't think students should be permitted to have firewarms here at DSU... There are too many irresponsible young people, and when alcohol gets involved with young people, which it often does, and firearms are around, bad things can happen. I would absolutely support faculty's right to have a firearam on their person or in their office though. There are plenty of older individuals well trained with firearms around DSU that would be very able to respond to any threat that occured on campus in an immediate way that the MPD just would not be able to.

  3. K-12 doesn't allow firearms in the buildings or on grounds, and while I realize adult college students may have some rights that children don't have, there is no logical reason for college students to have weapons on campus. I like to hunt, but I wouldn't even think about carrying a shotgun or rifle into a dorm room, much less a concealed pistol in a classroom.
