Lake County is awash in democractic (small-d) spirit, it appears. While we still only have one candidate for coroner, other offices are drawing a fair crowd of contenders. Most popular office so far: Lake County Commission. We are now up to seven candidates for three seats: Rod Goeman has officially filed*, making for a June 3 primary among him and his fellow Republicans Dan Bohl, Chris Giles, Scott Pedersen, and Roger Hageman. Gene Anderson from Volga just filed yesterday as an Independent (the first of the race here!)**, so he'll be on the November ballot, as will lone Democrat Craig Johanssen.
Hang on a minute... Volga? Anderson lists his address as 22059 463rd, Volga. But yup, check the map, and you'll find Anderson's homestead up a mile on the good side of the Lake-Brookings county line, amidst the Nunda-Sinai-Lake Campbell metroplex.
So get your pencils ready, Lake County. You're going to have lots of choices on the ballot this year. And stay tuned: the filing deadline for candidates is today. Stragglers can still mail their petitions (reminder: registered mail, postmarked by 5 p.m. today!), so by the end of the week, we'll have the roster of eager public servants ready to study.

*Update 09:55 CDT: How odd! As you'll see from the comments below, Rod still has his petitions in his pocket. Pierre thinks he's official, though. Just so folks know I'm not blowing smoke, here's the screenshot from Secretary Nelson's site, as of a few minutes ago (click for the full size image -- sorry about the file size!):
Note also the odd double-listing of Johanssen and Pedersen -- probably just a computer glitch... or hackers trying to sow chaos by disrupting the most important election in the country, the Lake County Commission race! ;-)
**Update 11:30 CDT: More strangeness on the candidate list: Candidate Goeman, who says he has now officially submitted his petitions, notices that Gene Anderson's petitions are clearly marked "Democrat."
Unless I filed my nominating petitions in my sleep last night, they have not yet been filed with Kay Schmidt. They are in the front pocket of my jacket. Your source is wrong by a few hours as I will likely file today before 5:00pm. I appreciate your enthusiasm, though. Rod Goeman
ReplyDeleteThat's funny: my source is the Secretary of State's online candidate list. I checked with Pierre; they said the county entries come from the County Auditor. I left a message with Kay -- maybe some data entry glitches at the courthouse?
ReplyDeleteSomething you'll learn if you follow the Secretary of State's Web site, it is often wrong. It's most likely being updated by some high school intern. The local media gets reports from the local County Auditor, who actually has the paper work and know the people who fill it out.
ReplyDeleteHmm... buck-passing? Secretary Nelson's office tells me that the county candidate entry comes straight from the county auditors.
ReplyDeleteOh well -- the candidates know who they are, and soon so shall we. Nelson's staff will have this all straightened out shortly.
