Obama Quote of the Day: Ferraro's Charge "Ridiculous"

In response to Hillary Clinton supporter Geraldine Ferraro's assertion that Barack Obama wouldn't be the Democratic frontrunner if he were white or a woman, Senator Obama declines to brand the remarks as "racist." However, he says the following:

"Here’s what I do believe,'' Obama said. "I think that her comments were ridiculous. I think they were wrong-headed. I think they’re not borne out of our history or by the facts. The notion that it is a great advantage for me to be an African American named Barack Obama in pursuit of the presidency, I think, is not a view that is commonly shared by the general public.

“If you pulled out a handbook of how to weigh your assets and liabilities in a presidential race,’’ he said, “I don’t think my name or my skin color would be in the asset column" [John McCormick and Mark Silva, "Obama: Stop 'Slicing and Dicing' Voters by Race," SwampPolitics.com, 2008.03.12].

  1. If Geraldine Ferraro really believes Obama is "better off" being black or that he would not be where he is if he were white or a woman, she's on crack!

He's charismatic, intelligent and reserved and if he were white, Hillary wouldn't even be in the picture at this point. He has so many similarities to the young Kennedy men, and his wife is bright and articulate.

I admire him for his ability to help people look beyond color and focus on the person. Hopefully, his general message of "change" and "hope" will develop substance as the campaign moves forward.

  2. Have you heard his "minister" today on TV? He is the most racist, hate-filled, America hating person I've ever heard in a pulpit. And Obama says this person inspired his book and was someone he looked up to. Really??? I think it's time people look beyond the words "hope" and "change" to what this charismatic Obama really believes and just exactly what he wants to change if he heaven forbid gets elected.

Ferraro's comment was absolutely nothing compared to what this so-called pastor yelled during his sermon. Any white minister saying these things would be creamed and the candidate who attended his church would also be held to account by association. Why isn't Obama?
