KJAM reports this morning that Lake and Moody Counties have issued overlay protection for the strip of Highway 34 between Madison and I-29 that the Four for the Future committee dreams of expanding to four lanes someday. State Representative Russ Olson (R-8/Madison) is given a little press space, saying the overlay district will "protect the price of the already costly project by dis-allowing [sic] new construction in the overlay district" [KJAM's words].
Odd thing is, this story doesn't really put the new in news: KJAM, MDL, and the Madville Times all reported this story and the problems the overlay district causes for local residents last August. With so much going on in Madison and South Dakota -- city commission meeting, rising gas prices, restaurant closings, free fishing weekend, Obama and Clinton campaigning like crazy in the state, Cornbelt League baseball swinging into action -- why would an old story from last summer with no new developments merit airtime? Maybe just some free campaign airtime that candidate Olson's treasurer Scott Delzer won't have to report to Secretary Nelson? Hmmm....

So if the road area is protected to I-29, why are they installing new light poles right next to the existing highway through Colman? Won't they have to be taken out once construction begins to widen the highway? Just wondering about that as I drove by the other day.
