Dr. Allen Unruh, a shopper at the market, says “People are more gardening nowadays and they stay away from chemicals and sprays.”
Unruh says it's simply safer to buy home-grown food.
“Everything has some kind of salt, sugar, dyes, and some sort of chemical and we avoid that with organic foods.”
And to top it off, local markets like this one offer one-on-one time for customers to ask what was used to treat the produce, if anything.
“There's a relationship thing happening between consumer and grower,” Unruh said [Karla Ramaekers, "Buy Locally, Eat Safely," KELOLand.com, 2008.06.14].
It's good to know Dr. Unruh is abstaining from chemicals and sprays in favor of locally grown food. Sounds like a truly pro-life attitude. Now if only we could get the Unruh family to stop pushing bad laws like Initiated Measure 11 into the "relationship thing" between women and their doctors.
Pass the salad, not the initiative.
The Vermillion Farmer's Market may still be small, but at least we're safe from Unruh sitings!
