McCain and Biker Babes: The Whole World Is Watching

I love it when South Dakota makes the headlines:

Topless Women, Kid Rock, Bikers, and John McCain

The town of Sturgis, South Dakota will witness, on Monday, the rare fusion of drunken debauchery, public stripteasing, motorcycle rallying, a live performance by Kid Rock, and - last but not least - a veterans-themed speech by presidential candidate John McCain. Seriously.

...As the presumptive nominee takes the stage, the "Ringin' Wet & Wild" women's wrestling event will be taking place on the main amphitheater. Two hours before then, the "Miss Buffalo Chip Beauty Pageant - Bikinis on the Beach" will be staged at a different venue. That affair is described by ESPN's Jim Caple as "essentially a topless beauty pageant. And occasionally bottomless, too" [Sam Stein, Huffington Post, 2008.08.03]

Sounds like a Grand Old Party to me. I wonder who's enjoying the press more: McCain or South Dakota Tourism?

  1. I saw it all when I lived in South Beach Miami. (Yawn.)

  2. Huffington Post doesn' write Headlines. Especially when they're about things that haven't even happened yet.

  3. Hey, Miami Beach is a fun town, even for a straight guy like me! (Note for the record.) But it got old.

In the five years I spent there, I gained insight into the gay predicament, as well as that of harrassed females. Watched several good men die, and a lot of cute girls become jaded and morose.

I got tired of the crowds, the noise, the crime, and the hurricane threat. It was like one endless Sturgis rally, but hotter, and with a real beach.

And then there were the street people.

As I said, it got old. But it softened my heart a good deal.

Let McCain speak at the rally. A lot of those folks are 'Nam vets.

  4. Most people who go to Sturgis are ordinary folks with jobs of all types who enjoy biking and showing off their bikes etc at the rally once a year. These are also voters with as much right to have a presidential candidate speak to them as the suit and tie types. Bet Obama would never consider attending this venue though.

  5. Just checking: this year Barack Obama has visited Watertown, Sioux Falls, Rapid City, and Mitchell. John McCain is visiting Sturgis. South Dakota is filled with "ordinary folks," and so far Obama has given them more attention than McCain.

Everybody knows there's a difference between going to Sturgis and going to the Buffalo Chip, Misogyny Central. But hey, have fun showing off your "etcetera."

  6. My son noticed a "Straight-Talk Express" bus was in downtown Rapid City yesterday.

I suppose McCain will give a rip-snorting speech there on family values and note the power of his good friend John Thune in saving SD from evil Democratic Family values.

Seems like it might be time to rename that bus the "Flip-Flop Milk Run".

  7. Has Obama been here since the primary? Methinks he paid us lip service when running against Hillary, but it didn't do him any good, did it??! Wonder if he will lower himself to talk to we bitter Americans who like our churches and guns now that it's the general election and we only have 3 electoral votes.

  8. McCain's ridiculous attacks on Obama lower my respect for him and using gas prices to sell off-shore drilling is not an energy solution. Obama has the integrity to give a less popular answer rather than a short-term political solution to get elected. As Erin B. on CNBC noted nearly overnight whale oil became obsolete (saving the whales) when they discovered crude oil. It's time to save the planet by investing in the next solution. JohnSD
