John McCain's Favorite Living Hero...

Politico.com posts Roger Simon's assessment of Colin Powell's Sunday endorsement of Barack Obama. He notes that our man Tom Brokaw had the good sense to keep his mouth shut and let the ex-general explain his reasoning clearly and fully for seven uninterrupted minutes of network airtime. Simon then recalls his experience on the Straight Talk Express in 1999, when a rather different John McCain was running for President:

The scene is the Straight Talk Express, the old Straight Talk Express, in 1999 — the one stuffed with reporters asking John McCain question after question and getting answer after answer, hour after hour. McCain is enjoying himself, even when the reporters, having exhausted all serious topics, turn goofy and play “favorites” with him, asking him his favorite tree (cottonwood), favorite breakfast cereal (Raisin Bran) and favorite toothpaste (Colgate).

And then there is this exchange that I recorded for history:

Favorite word, a reporter asks.

“Principle,” McCain says.

Favorite dead hero.

“Uh, Julius Caesar,” McCain says.

Favorite dead hero within the last 2,000 years.

“OK, off the top of my head, Lincoln,” McCain says. “Although the more I read and study, the more intrigued I am by Teddy Roosevelt.”

Favorite living hero.

“Colin Powell,” McCain says instantly. “Served his country. A wonderful man.”

  1. Obama promised Powell a seat in his Cabinet, so of course he endorses Obama for President. One hand greasing the other. At least McCain speaks honestly about his feelings for Powell, with no payback expected after Inauguration. The difference between Obama and McCain is decision making ability. Obama can't make decisions, didn't sponsor any legislation while in the Senate and is afraid to make mistakes, which could hurt his movie-star PR image. Not a true leader, that's for sure.

  2. Yeah, I still believe McCain thinks Powell is a hero. He's not going for the 'he's not the Powell I knew approach'!

It shows McCains integrity! Thanks, caheidelberger.

  3. They were discussing on FOX last night about Powell's endorsement of Obama. They had suggested that maybe he is endorsing Obama because of his skin color. Apparently a while back Powell had commented that he would like to see the US have a black president. Voting for Obama because he is black, is no different that voting for McCain/Palin because Palin is a women, or as some have said, she is the best looking.

My last thought, if Arnie can run the state of California, there is no reason that Palin can't be second seat in the White House.

  4. Now that the truth is coming out about Obama's tax plan in which those who don't even pay income tax will receive refunds each year, more mainstream Americans will see their tax bill increase under Obama. That will change opinions on election day because people may say they want "change", but they vote with their wallets and purses, and with the economy tight, surveys will be out the window. Palin will pull McCain through this election. She's stronger than the liberal media have allowed her to be perceived and her appearances have been huge, rivaling Obama's crowds.

  5. I think Colin Powell believes that Barack Obama would make a better President than John McCain, plain and simple. No hidden agendas, just a well-thought-out opinion. But I'm not convinced yet.

  6. I miss that John McCain from the 2000 campaign. I would've actually voted for that guy. Instead we're getting a McCain that was saddly a victim of conservative body snatchers.
