Big Boy Toy Show Sponsors Bail on Scarlett Strippers

KELO reports that Schaap's RV TraveLand, Billion Automotive, and Jack's Campers have all pulled out of the Big Boys Toy Show to avoid associating with the exotic dancers from Scarlett O'Hara's Gentlemen's Club whom Backyard Broadcasting planned to have tramping about the event.

It never ceases to amaze me the extent of euphemism surrounding the sex industry. "Exotic dancers"? Come now, let's be honest: they're eye prostitutes. And "gentlemen's club"? Chortle. What is gentle or manly about the clientele of a club featuring live porn?

The businesses bailing on the Big Boys Toy Show are using some honest language. Rachelle Schaap says pulling RV Traveland's sponsorship is about business, not morality:

"We're not trying to make a statement. We're just doing what is right for our business and what we believe in our hearts is the right thing for our employees, our business, and our customers" [Rachelle Schaap, quoted by Ben Dunsmoor, "Sponsors Drop Out; Annual Event Drops Dancers," KELOLand.com, 2009.01.16].

For all Sioux Falls's aspirations to big-city cosmopolitanism, some business owners still read the Sioux Falls market as more small-town South Dakota, where selling with sex just isn't good for business (not to mention your community or your soul). Even a secular humanist like me can feel some relief to know that Sioux Falls isn't quite Las Vegas.

Now if we could just get over all the marekting machismo and trying to convince men that they can compensate for their shortcomings by buying larger, louder toys....

  1. It may be a Big Boys' Toy Show, but little boys, moms and little sisters also attend to look at snowmobiles, campers, ATVs, boats and other recreational displays. I would hope we've evolved and outgrown the need for "sexy" attractions as if testosterone will be writing the check. Last I knew, women controlled 60% of all major purchases. Maybe they need the Chippendale Dancers.

  2. We don't NEED any of these TOYS that men WASTE their FAMILY'S money on.

Of course what can we expect from MEN.

If they would pay attention to what really mattered in the first place they wouldn't need all that junk in their lives.

Sounds like someone has their psychotic manhater crabby pants on today. The name Big Boy's Toy Show may not be appropriate anymore since there are also a lot of women there.

Of course what can we expect from WOMEN who like to spend time with their family camping, boating and being outdoors.

One man's junk is another woman's pleasure.
