NRA's Wayne LaPierre Lies to Me... on My Phone

So I'm enjoying the KELO news with my three-year-old when the phone rings.

"Who is it?" she asks.

"I'll find out," I say, dashing over to the phone.

After that telling auto-dialer pause, a young lady says, "Mr. Heidelberger?" After my hesitant acknolwedgment, she launches into a nervously brisk spiel explaining that she's with the National Rifle Association calling gun owners across South Dakota to conduct a survey. She says NRA exec Wayne LaPierre has a message that she promises will only be a minute, followed by a survey.

O.K., I'll bite.

The young lady plays the recording. Wayne LaPierre rolls says President Obama's vow to protect the Second Amendment "was an outright lie." LaPierre rolls out his finest fight language, saying Obama is stacking his administration with folks hostile to gun rights and warning the battle is now. Grand crusade stuff.

The tape ends, and on comes—whoops! now it's a guy! The autodialer must have cycled me over to another call center lackey. He asks pleasantly if I could hear Wayne LaPierre all right.

Sure did.

"So do you trust the Obama Administration to protect your Second Amendment rights?" the fellow asks.

"Completely."

He stammered just enough toward his "Thank you" to let signal that wasn't the expected answer. (I am the Unexpected™.) I laugh heartily and hang up.

"Who was that, Dad?" my three-year-old asks.

"Liars," I tell her. "Liars."

Wayne, I'm still waiting for that answer on how you and your silly guns will do anything to reverse the recession, reform health care, or contribute in any practical way to any of the other real problems our country faces.

  2. Who's the liar? From http://www.whitehouse.gov/agenda/urban_policy/ :

Address Gun Violence in Cities: Obama and Biden would repeal the Tiahrt Amendment, which restricts the ability of local law enforcement to access important gun trace information, and give police officers across the nation the tools they need to solve gun crimes and fight the illegal arms trade. Obama and Biden also favor commonsense measures that respect the Second Amendment rights of gun owners, while keeping guns away from children and from criminals. They support closing the gun show loophole and making guns in this country childproof. They also support making the expired federal Assault Weapons Ban permanent.

The Tiahrt amendment protects law enforcement officers and does nothing to impede investigations into crimes. BATFE trace data contains more than just criminal data. Repealing it does nothing to enhance law enforcement's ability to investigate crimes, but opens the door for drug dealers to find out who the cops are.

Common sense gun laws? They are already on the books. How about enforcing them. Criminals are far more likely to get a pass of "felon in possession" charges that serving any time for it.

Gun show loophole? What loophole? Anyone selling a firearm at a gun show is required to follow the same rules as anywhere else. Closing this so called loophole is adding a restriction to the sale of private property.

Assault weapon ban? What is that? Banning weapons because they look like military weapons? The original ban did absolutely nothing to reduce crime (its reason for existence) as did it expiration cause an increase.

Then there's Emanuel and Holder and all the other Clinton gun grabbers installed in Cabinet positions. Change? No. Coincidence? Not likely.

Then there's Obama's record as Senator and Illinois state senator. Never met a gun control bill he didn't like, including bills specifically designed to ban handguns and put onerous taxes on the rest. He's come out and said he's in favor of banning concealed carry nationwide.

So I ask again, who is the liar?

  3. Yes, In terms of how this will fix the economy. Selling more guns and assault weapons included, will provide more jobs for real Americans at the manufacturer and retail level. This will then perpetuate more sales for ammunition, hunting clothes, and liscense fees, which would all be taxable. In terms of heathcare. People employed by gun manufacturers and retailers will have insurance for heathcare and not be another load on the system. Next, if the recession gets real bad I will be able to harvest deer, antelope, elk, cotton tails, pheasants, ducks, and anything else that looks tasty. In fact, I am already doing this for hungry people in the state of South Dakota. This will then in turn reduce the amount of welfare (for a given time period) that person will need to utilize for food. Now, I'm sure you will want documented evidence that any of this will or does work. On the same token show me evidence it will not or does not work.

  5. You know, Nut, real people don't talk like that, not to each other's face.

The lie: more of the same old false rhetoric of dire conflict and fear, distracting us from discussion of practical political issues that have some chance of addressing real problems.
