Brookings Dems Using Obama Web to Put Single-Payer Back on Table?

I was surprised to hear a PSA on B93.7 Brookings yesterday for a public forum on single-payer health care. I thought maybe the Tea Party folks were accelerating their propaganda in the run-up to their divisive July 4th shenanigans.

But no: the event organizers are actually Dems:

A public forum to inform and discuss single-payer health care insurance with representatives from South Dakota's Congressional delegation. It will be held June 10, 2009, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brookings Public Library. It is free and open to the public. Sponsors are the Brookings County Democrats and the Brookings County Democracy in Action.

—Mary Perpich, chair Brookings County Democrats

This meeting is interesting for many reasons, among them, the fact that the organizers are using Barack Obama's "Organizing for America" website to promote an even to discuss a topic that President Obama himself has taken off the table. It's good to know Obama's supporters aren't the sheep some conservatives wish they were.

  1. I use Google Chrome as the browser for this blog. When I click on your "divisive July 4th shenanigans" link, it comes up with a huge warning to the effect that visiting that site may harm my computer! Ha, ha!

Firefox lets me in, and it's none other than the good old SDWC. I've been there daily for several months now, and my computer is still alive and thrashin', testing negative for cyber-pathogens.

The health-care debate ought to be interesting, indeed. I'm sharply divided in my own mind on this, so "divisive shenanigans," like phantom worms and viruses, give me no fear. We had better listen to everybody on this issue before we rush into a hastily contrived "cure" that could turn out to be worse than the "disease."

President Obama has said that if the health-care issue is not resolved this year, it will never be resolved. I don't understand that mentality. If it needs done and the American people want it, why should it suddenly become unattainable at the end of this year?

  2. Check that error message: did Chrome say the War College would harm you browser or your brain? ;-)

I agree that ideally, deadlines like that don't make sense. However, there may be some political reality there. Would we expect Congress to pass anything significant during an election year? And pragmatically, if I'm President Obama, and I perceive political momentum is on my side now, I don't take the chance that I'll still be riding that momentum one or two years from now: I push hard to get it done. Let's hope it gets done right!
