Hildebrand May Challenge Herseth Sandlin in Primary

Holy cow! Back in November, I asked if any South Dakota Dem was up for a primary challenge to our incumbent Representative Stephanie Herseth Sandlin.

If she blows another health reform vote, Steve Hildebrand may say yes:

Hildebrand, deputy national campaign manager for Obama's presidential campaign, told CNN in an exclusive interview that he has been frustrated with Herseth Sandlin's voting record for some time, especially her decision to oppose the House health care reform bill in November. The House is expected to vote again on the issue later this week and a Herseth Sandlin spokesperson has said she plans to vote no again.

"I want to see how she votes on health care," Hildebrand said. "If the vote is very, very close and we lose it or come close to losing it, I will take a seriously look at challenging her."

"She is on the wrong side of history," he added [Mark Preston, "Obama campaign guru eyes House seat," CNN Political Ticker, 2010.03.16].

I am so ready to have this conversation. Steve! Bring it on!

Ben Smith at Politico also notes that Hildebrand and SHS have offices in the same Sioux Falls building. Golly, they could carpool to debates!

I continue to believe that Taking Thune down is a more urgent matter.

  2. Doesn't he need to get signatures by the end of March? That would be difficult unless he started instantly.

  3. I'll sign here and now. Run, Steve, run!

Also agree we need a strong contender for Thune.

  4. Hildebrand wouldn't have any trouble getting the signatures to get on the ballot. That is a specialization of his company...he could accomplish that in a week or less.

  5. Options within the SD Democratic Party?? Behold, the Age of Progressivism has come! (Or did hell freeze over?)

  6. Even out in Ohio, some political friends of mine are talking about this (perhaps just because they know I'm from South Dakota and have been squawking lately about how disappointed I am with Stephanie's health care stances, among other things). If he felt like a road trip, I'd sign Steve's petition and a request for an absentee ballot right now.

  7. Toby, get that new mailing address ready: maybe Hildebrand's people will mail you a petition to sign (of course, if you can line up five other SD expats in Ohio to sign it too, all the better!).
