State Department Draft on Keystone XL Enviromental Impacts Open for Comment April 16

Plains Justice alerts us that the U.S. State Department has posted its draft Environmental Impact Statement for TransCanada's proposed Keystone XL pipeline, which will run the dirtiest oil in the world kittywampus across West River here in South Dakota. The State Department will open the document for public comment for 45 days, starting April 16.

Update 14:30 CDT: Bob Mercer usefully notes that the PDF document is huge and takes a long time to download. State Department, how about an HTML version?

The State Department will hold public meetings in South Dakota in May:

  • Murdo: Wednesday, May 12, 2010, 7:00 – 9:00 p.m., Triple H Restaurant (Interstate 90, exit 192), 601 5 Street, Murdo, SD 57559
  • Faith: Thursday, May 13, 2010, 12:00 – 2:00 p.m., Community Legion Hall, Main Street, Faith, SD 57626
  • Buffalo: Thursday, May 13, 2010, 7:00 – 9:00 p.m., Harding County Memorial Recreation Center, 204 Hodge Street, Buffalo, SD 57720

Might be worth the trip, folks. Ranchers, hunters, and other interested parties might want to discuss the environmental (and human rights!) impact of TransCanada's pipelines in Alberta.

  2. Cory has hyperlinked some extremely disturbing photos at "dirtiest oil in the world;" please take the time to look through the images.

  3. That's why people love the blog: dirty pictures!

But the photos of the oil sands are no joke. They are the environmental devil to which we are selling our future.

(By the way, I just posted on Bonhoeffer this weekend. I'm afraid I can't bless the bazooka. For now, stick with high-caliber language! :-) )

  4. There is some weirdness that I have overlooked.

Max Sandlin is an oil and gas lobbyist with ties to Keystone XL, a former judge, and is nearly twenty years older than his better-known spouse.

I wonder: How close does the proposed pipeline come to the Herseth family farm near Houghton?

  5. Max Sandlin has four children from a previous marriage. It might be interesting to follow the money requirements of his divorce decree.

    See how I am?
