Remember that petition drive in Brookings to refer to a public vote the county's decision to buy and demolish a couple houses in the historic district for parking? The petitioners needed to get 969 signatures; in one week, they gathered 1292 (exactly one third more than required—a nice numerical omen, I hope!).
Don't go buying new voting pencils yet; the folks at the courthouse still have to verify the signatures, and the states attorney still has to figure out whether folks can vote on this issue or not (come on, States Attorney Calhoon, you know you want to say yes!). But kudos to Nancy Flynn, Gloria Kloster, and the other petition drivers who opened up a serious can of grassroots Git-'er'done!
