Madison Has Entertainment?

You bet we do! Two movie screens at the theater, bands at Rumors and Jersey's (silly me -- I was spelling it like the t-shirt company), HS music and theater, two good libraries... what more do you want?

Well, KJAM has been running an online survey the last couple weeks asking "What do you feel is the most important for entertainment in the Madison Area?" The survey offers three options: movie theatre, dance club, and fine dining. Voting's been fast and furious, and more input is welcome. Movie theater is ahead right now, with fine dining a close second and dance club a distant third (boy, Madison really doesn't like dancing).

I'm wondering, though: does KJAM mean to ask (and are voters identifying) what of our existing entertainment facilities are the most important or what new entertainment facilities people would like to see started here? If the latter, the movie-theater vote is interesting: are folks suggesting Madison needs (and can support) a second cinema? Hmm, maybe we could start a new theater, a nice downtown hall where we could show independent and foreign films. That would be Unexpected™!

  1. Maybe people are asking for upgrades to our existing movie theater since the red seats are stain-covered, some are broken, cob webs lurk in the corners of the ceiling and it smells like mold in the summer and is freezing in the winter. Not to mention, no blacktop which means muddy shoes in the spring or if it rains. They do have the best popcorn in SD.

I realize that crowds may not be plentiful, but maybe with upgrades, more people would take in movies in Madison instead of driving to SF or Brookings. Since the same folks own the West Mall theater, maybe some of those profits could be reinvested in Madison.

Showing more than four movies a month would help too. Two movies a week, held over for two weeks, doesn't give us much variety.

The Playhouse is so underutilized as far as theater presentations and entertainment like new bands, comedians and other ideas. Even some old acts like the Old Time Fiddlers would bring crowds. We could attract many more visitors and keep people at home with more performances.

  2. The Playhouse! There's a thought -- right across from the community center, kids could go for a swim, then catch an afternoon matinee. Dairy Queen could send a mobile unit up there to sell ice cream on the street (DeLon! Put that freezer back in the Avalanche!) -- it'd be a hit!

  3. My family is in the progress of relocating to Madison and I voted for dance club. I didn't realize how bad of shape the theater was in. Having an updated Movie Theater would entice people from the surrounding area to visit as well. Can I change my vote?

  4. Anon 6:35 p.m. -- welcome to Madison! I don't think you can change your vote on the KJAM poll, but I did forward your comment to the radio station. When you get to town, give us a shout, e-mail or phone (256-4737) -- my wife and I will be happy to have you over for dinner and talk all about where you've come from and what you'll find here.

  5. Update for Anon6:35: KJAM's Matt Groce (The Voice of Madison!) says he has changed the numbers to reflect your changed vote! Thanks for the service, Matt!
