When Do We Get Our Stimulus Checks?

Update 2008.04.25: AP reports that President Bush just announced that the stimulus checks will start going out a week early. Direct deposit handouts start going out Monday, April 28; paper checks start going out on May 9. As far as I can tell, the chart below is still the planned schedule. And as far as I can tell, we're still going to end up spending most of our check on gasoline. At least Big Oil is enjoying the recession.

As you last-minute filers wrestle with your 1040s, a commenter grumbles about having to pay taxes next year on this year's bribe from Congress -- also known as the economic stimulus check. I checked with the IRS and found that the stimulus payment will not count toward your 2008 federal income tax.

While perusing IRS.gov (how's that for Saturday morning fun?), I also found this handy-dandy little schedule of when our checks:

Direct Deposit Payments

If the last two digits of your Social Security number are: Your economic stimulus payment deposit should be sent to your bank account by:
00 – 20 May 2
21 – 75 May 9
76 – 99 May 16
Paper Check
If the last two digits of your Social Security number are: Your check should be in the mail by:
00 – 09 May 16
10 – 18 May 23
19 – 25 May 30
26 – 38 June 6
39 – 51 June 13
52 – 63 June 20
64 – 75 June 27
76 – 87 July 4
88 – 99 July 11

If you get your refund by direct deposit, you get first crack at stimulating the economy. If you're like me and prefer to see and feel that lovely multi-colored check from the Treasury of the United States of America, you'll get to goose the GDP starting May 16. Expect to spend most of it on gasoline.

  1. our goverment is a joke! if they really wanted to make a clear and powerfull change they would have done $50,000 per household and $25,000 per individual. They spend trillions on wars and third world country aid..come on america wake up

  2. The government wants to stimulate the economy...lower the price of gas and food. It's a control issue.

  3. Gentle reader, are you advocating price controls? Nixon rises (and, according to the graph, so will inflation)! Policy recommendations, anyone?

  6. The Govn't should not have the lending institutions stop lending money, especially to those who have great credit, and deserve it, and NEED it to continue their small business !!!

  7. To the one who wrote our government is a joke. You will probably get your check and run out and buy something from japan and then complain about our economy . I bet you any money you drive a foreign car or you are on welfare. If you dont like the country move overseas.

  8. Oh, come now, Anon 7:27. Baseless accusations are silly. Take on some real demons, not the ones you prefer to imagine.

By the way... have you checked the "Made in" labels on everything in your house? And would you care to elaborate on what constitutes a foreign car? I learned last week that the Toyota Tundra has more American-made parts than the Dodge Ram, and the Ford Focus and Toyota Camry are both made from 65% American-made parts. The world is a bit more complicated than your comment suggests.

  9. Its really sad. That our Americans dont even no anything what is going on in the world.. Our economy is in trouble because of the Democrat presidents we have had... Putting jobs in diffrent countries, but not our own. Everything that is made in America is made sooo cheap.. That why should we buy it. Besides go to Wal-Mart and try to find something made in USA>> Have fun on your treasure hunt... Yeah we have troops fighting everyday in another country but I would rather it be there than here... That is there jobs when they signed up they were willing to fight for their country or what ever was ordered.. STOP running your mouth PEOPLE unless you know what you are talking about... MY advice is too vote for MCAIN, unless you want war here...

  10. Let's see, in the last 40 years, we have had 12 years with 2 Dem presidents and 28 years with 5 GOP presidents... and the only one to balance the federal budget was one of the Dems.

Thanks for the chuckle, Anon 12:23.
