Clinton Beats Obama to SD Punch

On a glorious spring morning when I should be celebrating Senator Obama's continued 2-1 lead over Clinton in primary/caucus victories (Obama 32, Clinton 16) and the continued pattern of big wins for Obama versus squeakers for Senator Clinton, I must praise the Clinton campaign for scoring her first big points of the campaign season here in South Dakota. On Thursday, she becomes the first Democratic Presidential candidate to visit South Dakota. The only other visit we've gotten this primary season was from her fellow New Yorker Rudy Giuliani back in November.

Clinton drops in for an airport speech Thursday afternoon at 2:15 p.m. in Sioux Falls. She'll be flying in from West Virginia, then flying right back out for an evening event in Oregon. (If I were her, I'd buzz Montana with a megaphone while I was at it!) Coast-to-coast campaigning, sun-up to sundown -- that's the kind of hustle that makes this primary season so exciting!

Update 08:35 CDT:
AP Headline:

"Clinton Lends Herself $6.4M as Obama's Lead Grows"

Come on -- airfare to South Dakota isn't that much!

---------------
Update 08:41 CDT: And maybe while we're here, we can get her clarify what standards we are to use to determine which economists know what they are talking about and which ones are just out-of-touch elitists. Surely the answer isn't simply, "The economists who agree with me are right, the economists who don't are elitists." Surely not.

  1. Good for her! Apparently Obama doesn't think South Dakota is important enough to visit; although, I am sure he will make a pitstop sometime after Clinton just to save face.

Have you tried to fly out of there lately Cory?

And anonymous 8:21, it's over for Clinton, she is just stumping for cash to pay back the loans to herself. She's got until June 3rd to try and collect $11.6 million (total money she has loaned to her campaign). But then again I guess she can just send Bill out for a few more speaking engagements to make up the losses.

  3. I mistyped, it should read $11.4 million that she loaded herself, but what's a few hundred thousand among friends?

  4. anon 8:21 here...

I dont disagree with you. It's just funny that she makes the stop and he already said he wasn't going. I just am curious as to if he will change his mind.

It frustrates me to no end, that the presidential candidates don't think South Dakota is "Worth their time" unless they are down to the wire...

  5. Um, when did Obama say he's not coming? Word bouncing about is that May 19 may be the big day....

  6. anon 8:21 here..

It was when the primaries first started. I heard it on the news (unfortunately I don't have a source to quote). It was sometime between cooking dinner and helping my 3 year old run the computer when I heard it. There was a report that neither candidate intended to visit the state because our delegate wouldn't be the deciding factor.

  7. Oh, o.k. That's cool. But again, that was the beginning of the primaries, when they still had to focus on beating Dennis Kucinich. ;-)

Whoever's coming, and whenver, Clinton gets props for being the first to put a date on the calendar. Now if only she'll keep it there...
