Send your résumés: At last night's meeting, the Madison Central School District approved a new contract that raised starting pay for teachers from $27,300 to $30,500. That's $3,200, an 11.7% boost. This raise beats the base salary increase the Watertown school board passed last month: new teachers at Watertown get $29,250 next school year, a boost of $1,750. Of course, the Watertown board also approved a remarkable three-year contract that guarantees the base salary will keep going up, to $30,750 for 2009-10, then $32,000 for 2010-11.
My source says Madison's returning teachers will see good raises as well. Once again, our local districts are doing more than their share, while the state focuses on kissing corporate keester.

ReplyDeleteOK, let's see, now a beginning teacher will be making the equivalent of $40,666 per year based on a the number of days worked by other workers who are not teachers. This is using 180 work days for teachers, and using 240 work days for non-teachers (52 weeks of 5 days per week less 2 weeks vacation and less 10 holidays). I don't want to now hear a single complaint that teachers are underpaid in SD. They will be making more than similarly educated workers in most other jobs in the state, and this is just to begin with. It's unfair to use the argument that we are bottom of the totem pole in teacher pay wihout factoring everything else in also. Actually factoring in the other things like cost of living etc, we rank about in the middle. But you will never hear teachers admit that.
