Superintendent Vince Schaefer calls this afternoon to let me know I've once again failed to make the cut. Five applicants filed for the vacancy on the Madison Central School Board, and the board has chosen two to interview: Steve Nelson and Roxie Ebdrup. Nelson farms north of Junius; Ebdrup joined CommissionSoup last year as executive project assistant and lives just west of the F&M by Madison.
In a pleasant move toward transparency, the school board will interview both candidates in open session this coming Monday, June 16. Such a session sounds like an excellent opportunity for these candidates to demonstrate how well they hold up under the public scrutiny that comes with public office.
I'd still love to give the public a chance to compare the applications the board had to choose from. Steve and Roxie, as well as the remaining two mystery candidates, give me a ring (256-4737) and I can arrange to post your apps online for all the voters to see. Hooray for open government!

Update 17:20: The school board agenda is posted: special meeting Monday, June 16, 6:00 p.m., Board Room, MHS. Two interviews, with an appointment vote that evening. Should be fun! Let's just hope no one breaks out a deck of cards....

It seems you'll just have to run again next spring and earn a spot of your own. That way there's no doubt that the majority of the public wants you to serve. Should be two or three seats up again next year?
ReplyDeleteOpen gov't has its limits. The public doesn't need to know every last detail about each candidate's qualifications. The school board is the one making the decision who to hire. If there were an election to fill the seat that would be different. Remember the best form of gov't is a benevolent dictatorship.
ReplyDeleteWhere were these other candidates when the actual election was held? I think the people do have a right to know the qualifications of all candidates for this school board seat, especially since they don't get to elect this member. Otherwise it could simply become a poplularity contest or simply picking the person most likely to agree with all the board's positions on issues.
