Ebsen Takes Helm at Lake County Equalization

Herman Township Mafia rising: the Lake County Commission has picked my neighbor Shirley Ebsen as the new Director of Equalization. She replaces Jerry Seidel, who leaves the job at the end of this month. (Let's see how long it takes the county to update its very static webpage). Ebsen is keeping Rick Becker, another public servant with Herman Township connections, as her assistant in the equalization office. O.K., you two, time to give back some love: let's cap those increases in Lake Herman assessments at 1-2% next time around! ;-)

Ebsen has directed the welfare office; she also was the go-to person at the courthouse when the Lake Herman Sanitary District straightened out its messed-up map last year. She spent over two hours with me poring over section lines and rods and was focused through the whole process on making sure we did everything right down to the letter. Ebsen's a good communicator, and she'll run the office fairly and openly.

  1. She is reasonable and approachable. Did anyone noticed the county offered a base pay of $14.51(?) per hour for this professional job which I would have guessed paid $60K to $70K. The money has to come from somewhere, and none of us want to pay more in taxes (actually we do if we receive something for it I hope), but we have pay our people. We have to pay or people. That is not enough. John Hess

  2. Dang—Shirley could make more teaching high school, or being a grad assistant at DSU!

You're right, John: it does seem like low pay for a job where she'll have to take a lot of guff (some of it from me!).
