- Kevin Woster at Mount Blogmore sees bringing in the big names as good headline strategy. He thinks GOP slime-meister Lucas Lentsch "overstates" the "Look at those liberals!" attack line ("as is his job," Woster notes). Woster wonders, though, if the liberal associations might turn off some voters come general election time (keep trying, Pat!).
- Doug Wiken notes in comments to Woster that even if you're an animal of completely different (orthogonal?) political stripes, you shouldn't pass up the chance to have a conversation with two remarkable and intelligent politicians like Abourezk and McGovern.
- Bob Mercer is "stumped" by the conservative noise over a gubernatorial candidate enjoying the campaign assistance of two well-known South Dakota statesmen. The only downside Mercer sees is that Abourezk and McGovern may be too far removed from the memory of the younger half of the electorate to rouse much excitement. I suggest to Bob that one can find an appreciation of history among our younger voters.
- Travis Dahle at the real Badlands Blue notes that association with a war hero and a civil rights leader might benefit a candidate more than hiring a strident conservative blogger who focuses on ad hominem attacks.

I expected something truly wonderful about Munsterman this morning at SDWC, in response to your post of yesterday. You know, racking up the in-kind bill.
ReplyDeleteNada.
I'd think attacking Abourezk and McGovern, no matter what side you're on, might be a little out there.
Not really part of the subject or whatever but did you know that Lucas Lentsch tried to be a Country and Western Singer at one time? I really wish I could get you a copy of his CD that he put out. Talk about cheesy....and he used to be in the dairy industry.

ReplyDeleteLucas Lentsch made cheesy country music? Talk about guilt by association! Get me that CD! The whole GOP would collapse... but wait: cheesy country music would probably win votes here. ;-)

ReplyDeleteAnother quote from your guy:
James Abourezk: "Perhaps I'm thinking back to when I was in office. Try as they might back then, the Zionists could find no dirt on me, so they resorted to attacking my children in order to get at me."

Glad he's wrapping his arms around Heidepriem.
...still waiting for one line about actual policy from the smear campaign....
ReplyDeleteIs that all the quotes you can find?
ReplyDeleteI want more.
12 more and I will respond to each of them.
Deal?
The sad thing is that there are at least that many, if not more.
ReplyDeleteAnd he's your guy.
It's been several days since his attack on McGovern and Abourezk, with the responses asking for something concerning actual policy from his own candidate, something good, something to sink your teeth in, something positive.
ReplyDeleteNothing.
Munsterman doesn't have anything going for him, so much so that attacks on former prominent politicians is the only thing he can come up with?
Has Munsterman considered a new campaign manager yet?
This is one of those campaign issues that i can never figure out... Heidepriem will not be helped that much by having McGovern and Abourezk endorsements. The same people that will already vote for Heidepriem are really the only ones that like McGovern and Abourezk anyway. So its not a big vote getting thing at all... (maybe a little in a primary, but not much overall)
ReplyDeleteNow that aside - if you were to pull off getting the endorsement of someone that we at the GOP side would find appealing, you might actually be able to swing a few more votes your direction.
maybe i should stop before i give out too many good ideas again.... :) :) :)
Munsterman himself has done a reasonable job of talking policy. It may be only a matter of time before his Christian sensibilities kick in and he tells his campaign manager to knock off the baseless ad hominem.
ReplyDeleteTaunia is dead right: at not one point in this discussion has PP answered the main question: what specific policy issues does the McGovern-Abourezk endorsement highlight that make Heidepriem a lesser candidate? Are McGovern and Abourezk saying, "We support Heidepriem because he'll impose a state income tax, raise taxes on insurance and real estate agents, quadruple teacher pay, and normalize relations with Cuba"? Where's the beef, PP?
Michael, you ask a different question: will the endorsements actually win Heidepriem any new voters? Remains to be seen. But consider: throw a campaign event 7+ months before the primary, and are you going to draw a crowd? Get some big names, you increase the chance of getting a bigger crowd, from which you just might draw some more early volunteers and donors who are vital for getting voters later.
