Sarah "Tom Eagleton" Palin Giggles at Misogyny

"Giggleton" pick to unite Hillary vote... behind Obama!

Courtesy of Badlands Blue (who gets paid to find stuff like this), here's Governor Sarah Palin, your next Vice-President, standing up for civil discourse and decent treatment of women last January on The Bob and Mark Show on KWHL, Anchorage, Alaska (careful, foul language):

"I'm going to say what I wish you could say..." and Palin says nothing to challenge that. Radio host Bob Lester questions Republican State Senate President Lyda Green's fitness as a mother, calls her a "cancer" (Green survived breast cancer) and the b-word, and makes a joke about her being fat. Palin responds by saying she'd "be honored to have you guys" at the State of the State Address. She then returns to the same program to talk about her joining the McCain ticket... and one of the first things the host says to her teenage daughter and the governor is, "You look so great". Host Bob Lester goes on to refer to Palin as "girl" twice... and then talk fishing with Senator McCain (who also says he'd love to be on their show).

I have a hard time imagining Hillary Clinton voters giggling along with Palin in response to anti-feminist language like that, let alone voting for her and McCain.

Palin was looking like the next Dan Quayle, or with her Big Oil subsidies maybe the next Dick Cheney. But now I'm thinking McCain has actually found himself a Thomas Eagleton (and it only took a couple hours for this idea to hit the Web), a lesser-known candidate, insufficiently vetted, soon to be dumped, and raising campaign-killing questions about the judgment of the nominee who picked her.

Dan Fagan of the Anchorage Daily News offers an insightful local analysis of Governor Palin's giggling and her half-hearted apology.

Update 10:05 CDT: More traction for the Palin-Eagleton parallel: see Steve Snyder, "Is Sarah Palin the New Tom Eagleton?" DigitalJournal.com, 2008.08.31. (And if you check out some of Snyder's other writings here and here, you'll see he's no Obama booster.)

Update 10:38: Ah, but McCain won't dump Palin: she shares his sense of humor.

  1. Could it be that Sarah Palin was trying to portray and magnify a contrast between her Puritanical politeness and Bob Lester's crass coarseness?

If so, she did a great job until the end. Then she blew a grand opportunity. Instead of responding to Lester's visitation offer with "I'd be honored to have you," she should have said, "Not in this life."

How is Sarah Palin going to handle the keen wit of Joe Biden? I can hardly wait to see. It will be like watching a hurricane video. The only variable is which way the gale will blow. I'm hoping for west-to-east, but I'm not optimistic.

  2. May I suggest that you all take time to read a poem written in 1911 by my favorite writer, Rudyard Kipling, titled The Female of the Species. I have had the privilege of having been associated with many professional and committed females of our species and I can tell you a laugh and a giggle from that kind of a female is in no way a sign of weakness or lack of intellect but is an indication of something much deeper. If Mr. Biden makes such a negative assumption about this lady he may be in for a very sad surprise.

I still do not know if this strong, outspoken woman who has more in common with those of us who live in South Dakota than any of the other three candidates, was the right choice for VP., but I do know she is qualified to be President and Vice President. Like it or not,our Constitution is the only thing that defines qualifications and she is qualified. We may argue as to whether or not we want her to be Vice President but not as to her qualifications.

  3. Chide her all you want, Cory, but Sarah Palin is an elected "leader" unlike either democratic candidate including Hillary. Neither Barack Obama or Joe Biden have ever led a city or a state...Palin has been elected several times to do both. Leadership is what this election is all about. Being one of 100 folks giving your opinion or voting on a partisan issue is one thing, making final decisions that affect people in your community or across your entire state is another. Crap floats to the top and Sarah Palin has proven she has the ability to lead, both as Mayor and as Governor in Alaska. I really felt Pawlenty would be the choice, but wholeheartedly support Palin as VP.

  4. Should have added this to my post. I have never voted for a Democrat for President, but as I listen too Mr. Obama and his wife and observe their children is all I see is my son, daughter-in-law and two grandchildren. It's very possibe that I will make personal history during this election and vote, with a prayer in my heart that we last that long, for an America that might exist 50 years from now!

  5. Joe Biden's hair makes him look like he had electro shock therapy just like fellow liberal Senator Eagleton....
